Conceiving Questions to Map Authentic Learning

How do kids come up with their own questions, one may ask? It starts with helping students identify what it is that really drives them. Within the context of the individual subjects being learned, what do they want to know more about?

If the student comes as a blank slate, it may be a good idea to have choice into their entry into a subject. Entice them with survey pieces that allow them to explore possibilities and then develop questions during this exploration period.

For student journalists, this happens with a drive to delve deeper into a particular topic. Whether the topic was assigned or chosen or connecting to an event that occurred, questioning people and research is essential to developing trust with an audience. This authentic means to learning can be applied to every area and content, especially in today’s world where so much information is available for free.

Students no longer only have textbooks or encyclopedias to explore in order to find answers. Search engines make it possible to use keywords or questions to quickly seek out answers to challenging questions, and where the articles can’t provide adequate responses, access to the writers or experts is available. Reaching out to these primary sources has never been easier, and when students do reach out, we want to make sure that they are prepared with good questions that will gather great information worth sharing.
